Class Descriptions
Tribal Bellydance Level 1 - Foundations
Tuesdays 7:00-8:00 at m'illuminoThursdays 7:00-8:00pm at Phinney Neighborhood Center
This level will get you moving to the tribal groove, with an introduction to the fundamentals of tribal movement and partner work, isolations, & strength-building. We'll get you dancing from the very first class! Geared toward the new student, but vital to continuing students for refinement, this class establishes a strong foundation for every dancer. Even if you have taken tribal and/or other bellydance classes before, this class will be instrumental in familiarizing students specifically with Deep Roots' particular style.
Classes include a gentle warm-up, then we cover in detail one slow and one fast concept, and finally we work with transitions and partnering concepts. Students will need to purchase high quality student zils (finger cymbals), which can be found at Saroyan Mastercrafts--either Afghanis or Grecians are recommended.

Tribal Bellydance Level 2/3 - Mixed Level Foundations Plus
Thursdays 8:00-9:00pm at Phinney Neighborhood CenterBuild on your vocabulary and concepts you learned in Level 1, and challenge yourself at this next step in your dance explorations. In this 12-week cycle we put the emphasis is on refinement of skills and exploring various combinations and variations. This class is best used in combination with Level 1 - Foundations as there is no breakdown of the foundation steps. Students are also expected to understand the fundamentals of partner work. We start every class with some challenging tribal fusion skill drills designed to increase your strength and endurance, as well as get your brain and body moving with greater complexity. From there we will explore a myriad of new moves and group dancing concepts together, which will expand our collective dance language. At this level there is greater focus on chorus work and partnering.

Level 3 - Combos & Concepts
Tuesdays 8:00-9:30 at m'illuminoThis class is by instructor permission only.
This class gives you the tools to really push your dance to the next level. Emphasis on intermediate explorations, including Deep Roots Dance-specific vocabulary and skills, strengthening and flexibility, refined technique, layering, and building on communal tribal movement vocabularies. We will explore more advanced group dynamics, formations, and transitions. Special topics may include floor-work, props, balancing skills, solos, and choreography. In 2012 this class doubles as a rehearsal space for Nomaditude.
Beginning Feb 14th: Level 3 - Performance Prep
Tuesdays 8:00-9:00 at m'illuminoThis class will be technically a 7-week series, as it will be comprised of a regular six week series, plus a final dress-rehearsal.
Open to anyone who has taken at least two full Level 1 series, or has previous equivalent ATS® experience.
Join us to be a part of the afternoon showcase for Cues & Tattoos! We will be doing a combined class/rehearsal for these six weeks, spending part of class refining by-request technique and partner and group dynamics, and the other part we will be working on stagecraft and assembling a stage-ready show to perform together for C&T.
Don't want to perform, but still want to learn some performance prep skills? No problem, you need not perform to take the class, but you do have to take the class in order to perform. So come one, come all, and let's jam together!
Pre-requisites: Student must have taken at least two full sessions of Level 1 or have equivalent ATS® experience from another class. All students must take one other technique class a week, any level, as this class will not replace regular technique practice. For students who cannot attend regular weekly classes, the I *heart* ATS intensive is an acceptable technique course to fulfill this requirement. Dress rehearsals are particularly vital, so please note that as with all performances with Deep Roots, missing either of the two dress rehearsals, March 20th & 27th, may result in having a reduced role in the performance. If you have a scheduling conflict, please contact Shay to discuss arrangements.
Notes about this class: No drop-ins. Pre-registration is required. Performers must attend at least 4 of the 6 class nights, plus the final dress rehearsal, to be able to participate in the performance.

Registration Policies
Registrations are only good for the session for which they were purchased. These sessions begin and end on specific dates, and are not refundable or transferable to future sessions. However, they can be transferable to a friend if done within the first two weeks of the session. Students are permitted one (1) make-up for a missed class in a session by attending a different class, at their current class level or below, within that six week session (for instance, if you take classes Thursday Level 2, you may attend a Level 1 Tuesday or Thursday night to substitute your missed class). No make-ups after that session has ended.
Class Cancellation Policies
I have only canceled classes for unavoidable situations (contagious illness and unable to get a substitute, or snow--see below). If for some reason, I need to cancel a class, I will to the best of my ability do so with at LEAST 2 hours notice prior to the beginning of the class via an e-mail to all students. I will also post a notice on the class website.
If a single class is canceled in a session, it may not be made-up--pre-registration is the cost of 5 classes, so no value is lost. If for some reason I have to cancel a second class in a session, I will hold a make-up class, credit the balance toward the next session, or issue refunds at my discretion. If a make-up class is held, it will be at a day and time when it seems the most students can attend--it cannot always necessarily be held on the same night and time due to scheduling constraints. If it seems this option prevents too many students from attending, then I will issue credits against the next session.
Snow Cancellations
If there is snow on the ground in Seattle, the community center tends to close. Snow on the ground is generally enough for me to cancel classes anyway--we have an incredibly poor system in place for sanding or plowing roads, and drivers are generally unaccustomed to the driving conditions. I have a lot of students who travel distances--some as far as Puyallup, Olympia, and Arlington!--and I don't want anyone to endanger themselves by driving on icy roads to class, or miss class due to dangerous road conditions preventing them from attending. So watch your weather reports and road conditions for your first indications if class will be on or not. As is possible, I will make the call no later than *2 hours* prior to the start of the first class of the evening, and will e-mail all students as well as post on the front page of this website.
